HISTORY

Established in 1953, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County Branch is part of a global civil engineering community. Our Branch has over 2,200 members in Orange County, California and is currently the fourth largest branch within ASCE Society as a whole. Orange County has over 3.16 Million residents (2021 estimate) and covers 791 square miles.

The ASCE Orange County Branch is one of seven ASCE branches in the ASCE Los Angeles Section. It is one of the four sections located in ASCE Region 9, which coincides with the state boundaries of California (the only ASCE region to comprise a single state).

​

With a total of 10 regions, ASCE was founded in 1852. Nine of its regions are within the United States, while Region 10 comprises the rest of the globe. The Society has over 150,000 members in 177 countries and is the oldest national engineering organization. Its membership includes students, younger members, fellows, affiliates, and life members.

Our mission is to provide essential value to our Orange County members and partners, advance civil engineering, and serve our local community.  During a typical year, our volunteers plan and host over 100 events. Our events cater to different audiences, including social gatherings, soft skills development, technical presentation and/or seminars, student outreach, community service, mentorship, and much more!

A few of our Branch's flagship events include:

• Our History and Heritage/Student Scholarship & Job Fair Night (held every Fall) celebrates the history and heritage of our civil engineering infrastructure in Orange County and recognizes our prominent student leaders and rising engineers.

• Our Awards Night Dinner (held every Spring) distinguishes the most outstanding local individuals and projects within our civil engineering community.

• Our Annual Golf Tournament (held every Summer) raises funds for current and future ASCE Orange County programs, initiatives, and events.

• Our Speaker Series (organized by our Younger Member Forum) informs our younger leaders on career advancement and helps them with both technical and soft skills.

• Our Joint-Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition (organized biennially with ASCE Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch) promotes STEM careers to K-12 students.

• Technical presentations and site visits held by our six technical institute chapters (the Construction Institute, the Environmental & Water Resources Institute, the aforementioned Geo-Institute, the Structural Engineering Institute, the Transportation & Development Institute, and the Utility Engineering & Surveying Institute).
