The UCI Student Chapter hosts multiple meetings and events!

Simpson Strong-Tie General Meeting

ASCE UCI hosted their fourth general meeting of the fall quarter on November 28th, 2023. We had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers from Simpson Strong-Tie. Our members had the unique opportunity to learn more about the structural aspect of the civil engineering industry.

ASCE UCI would like to give special thanks to Angel Leon for speaking about their experience at Simpson Strong-Tie and for sponsoring the food. We are very grateful for all your contributions toward student success!

ASCE UCI Volunteers at Bolsa Chica Land Trust

On Sunday, December 3rd, members of the External Team at ASCE UCI volunteered at the Bolsa Chica Land Trust. The event, which is held twice a month from 9am to 12pm, usually consists of some activity such as planting native wildlife or cleaning up trash from the bay. During this particular event, volunteers helped by clearing some invasive grass from the property and planting new native wildlife to return the ecosystem to its original state.

The Bolsa Chica Wetlands, which the land trust operates on, actually has many years of history from being an oil reserve to a designated military site, to what it is now today. While working, volunteers learned facts about the wetlands as well as the native life from Beverly Hansen the Programs and Volunteer Coordinator. One exciting or dramatic moment that occurred was when a mouse went up someone’s pants! Not something you see everyday, but that just shows how each volunteering event is unique and different. Is it quite evident that the volunteer events are popular with individuals from all across the communities from high school students to elderly retirees. Anyone with a passion for nature and wildlife will surely love this event, not to mention the beautiful views of the beach along the way.

Informative Bingo Night

ASCE UCI hosted their first meeting of the fall quarter on January 10th, 2024. ASCE UCI members enjoyed a fun night of educational bingo, where each bingo square announced, shipped with useful information such as companies coming to ASCE UCI career fair, prominent CEE classes, and facts about PSWS events. Many members were just shy of winning every round, keeping everyone at the edge of their seats. Winners of this exciting night won prizes such as thunderous applause, PSWS merch, and a gift for your favorite person in the room. The meeting had a wonderful energy, a great way to start the quarter!

ASCE members wait for the next bingo ball to be called out.

ASCE OC University Outreach Resume Workshop

ASCE OC YMF members, Karen, Alex, Jonathan, and Darlyn came down to UCI to enable ASCE UCI students to build the best resumes they can make in preparation for the upcoming UCI CEE Career and Internship fair. They shared with the students a presentation breaking down what recruiters are looking for in resumes, common pitfalls and mistakes, as well as how to present yourself during the career fair. After the presentation had concluded, members had the opportunity to have a one-on-one session with the OC YMF members to review their resumes. ASCE UCI members definitely learned a lot and are very grateful for OC YMF!
